More about Equine Therapy
What is Equine Energy Therapy?
1
Equine Energy Therapy is a form of energy healing offered directly to horses, and sometimes to horses and their humans together. Working with the horse's energy field, I communicate with the horse to understand what is held there, whether that is physical tension, emotional disturbance, relational difficulty with their human, or the residue of past experience, and create the conditions for something to shift.
Horses are extraordinarily sensitive beings. They read energy constantly and respond to what is unspoken as readily as what is visible. This makes them both uniquely receptive to energy work and uniquely expressive of what needs to move.
Sessions draw on the same modalities I use with human clients: Emotional Freedom Technique, Emergent Constellations, and intuitive energy healing, adapted for working with a horse in their own environment, their stable, field, or yard.
Horses communicate through behaviour, movement, and the quality of their presence. When something is out of balance, they will find a way to show you, even if what they're showing you is subtle or confusing.
You might notice your horse has become resistant in ways they weren't before. Perhaps they're difficult to tack up, reluctant to work, or showing tension in their body that has no clear physical cause. Perhaps they've experienced something: a change of home, a loss, an injury, a difficult relationship with a previous owner or rider, and something in them hasn't settled since.
Sometimes it's less dramatic than that. A horse that feels flat, disconnected, or somehow not quite themselves. A horse whose behaviour shifts depending on who is with them. A horse that seems to carry something you can feel but you can’t put your finger on.
If you find yourself wondering whether there is something more going on beneath the surface for your horse, that wondering is usually worth paying attention to.
Energy therapy works well as a standalone support and alongside veterinary care, physiotherapy, and other treatments your horse may already be receiving.
How do I know if my horse would benefit from energy therapy?
2
Equine energy therapy can support horses who are experiencing a wide range of physical, emotional and behavioural challenges.
Behaviourally, this might include resistance to being handled, tacked up or ridden, spookiness or hypersensitivity, aggression, separation anxiety, difficulty bonding with their rider or a new herd, or patterns of behaviour that persist despite training interventions.
Emotionally, horses can carry the residue of difficult experiences: trauma from previous handling, grief after the loss of a companion, anxiety after a change of yard or owner, or the cumulative weight of stress that has never had space to move through and out.
Physically, energy therapy works well alongside veterinary and bodywork treatments, supporting horses who are holding tension in their bodies, recovering from injury or illness, or presenting with physical symptoms that don't have a clear or complete explanation.
It is also worth noting that horses are deeply relational beings. Sometimes what shows up in a horse is a reflection of something in the relationship between horse and human, and exploring that together can be profoundly valuable for both.
If you are unsure whether energy therapy is right for your horse's particular situation, a free conversation is always the best place to start.
What sort of ‘issues’ can equine energy therapy help with?
3
Do you involve the horse’s owner/rider in the session?
4
My sessions work with both you and your horse present together wherever possible. Having you there is valuable in ways that go beyond practicality. You get to witness your horse's releases and shifts in real time, which can be profound, and your presence also gives me information about the relationship and the energy between you that I couldn't access any other way.
As the session unfolds I will feed back to you as we go and ask questions where they feel relevant. Mostly though, your role is simply to be present and to witness. There is something quietly powerful about watching your horse be met in this way.
That said, I can absolutely work with your horse alone if you are unable to be there. The work is still effective and complete in its own right.
Occasionally the information that comes through in a session might indicate that your horse needs space to be worked with alone. This hasn't happened yet in my practice but it is entirely possible, and if it did we would explore that together before making any decisions.
Whatever the session looks like, you will never be pushed into anything that doesn't feel right for you or your horse. The work unfolds in response to what is actually present, not according to a fixed plan.
What does a typical equine therapy session look like?
5
There is no such thing as a completely typical session because every horse and every situation is different, and the work always follows what is present rather than a predetermined structure. That said, here is a sense of what you might expect.
We will begin with a conversation, just you and me, before I meet your horse. I want to understand what has brought you here, what you are noticing, and anything you feel is relevant about your horse's history, temperament or current situation. This doesn't need to be comprehensive or perfectly articulated. Sometimes the most important information arrives in the telling rather than in what you already know.
I will then spend time with your horse, working with their energy field, following what comes up, and moving through whatever wants to shift in that session. I will feed back to you as we go, sharing what I am noticing and asking questions where they feel relevant. You are welcome to ask questions too.
Sessions typically last between 45 and 60 minutes, though horses give very clear signs when they have done enough work and I trust their communication that the session is complete. If that happens sooner, we honour it. The work is the work.
Afterwards we will take a few minutes together to reflect on what came up and I will share any observations or recommendations for the days following the session, as integration continues after I leave.
Do the sessions treat physical and emotional symptoms?
6
Energy therapy works with the whole horse, and horses, like humans, do not experience their physical and emotional lives as separate things. Tension held in the body has an emotional history. Emotional disturbance expresses itself physically. The two are always in conversation with each other, and the work meets both.
In a session I am not diagnosing or treating in a medical sense. What I am doing is working with the energy field of your horse to create the conditions in which something can shift, release, or settle. What that looks like will be different for every horse and every session.
Some horses show physical releases during a session, changes in breathing, yawning, sighing, muscle softening, or shifts in posture and movement. Others show emotional releases, a settling of anxiety, a dropping of vigilance, a quality of presence that wasn't there at the start. Often both happen together.
Equine energy therapy works beautifully alongside veterinary care, physiotherapy, osteopathy, and other treatments your horse may already be receiving. It is not a replacement for medical assessment or treatment, and if I have any concern that your horse needs veterinary attention I will always say so.
What I can say is that horses respond to this work in ways that are often remarkable and sometimes unexpected. They are honest, they do not perform, and what shifts in a session is real.
